Frequently asked questions
Everything customers ask us before booking — the free home appointment, how measuring and fitting work, how a quote is put together, choosing between blinds, curtains and shutters, and what our 1-year guarantee covers. If your question is not here, ring 0800 233 55 66.
Home appointments
How the free visit works, what happens on the day, and how far ahead to book.
What actually happens at a free home appointment?
An advisor comes to you with the full sample range, holds fabrics and finishes against your own windows in your own light, measures every opening themselves, and leaves you with a written price for the blinds, the fitting and the guarantee. It usually takes about an hour for a couple of rooms and longer for a whole house. There is nothing to pay on the day and no obligation to order.
Is the appointment really free?
Yes. The visit, the samples, the measuring and the written quote are all free, whether or not you go ahead. You only pay if you decide to order.
How soon can someone come out?
Each area has its own visiting days, so the soonest date depends on your postcode. We do not take same-day bookings — appointments need at least a day's notice so your advisor can plan the route and bring the right samples. Put your postcode into the booking form and it shows you the actual dates and arrival windows for your area.
Will I be given a time or a whole day?
You pick an arrival window when you book — a few hours rather than a whole day — and your advisor calls if traffic moves them within it.
Do I need to be home for the whole visit?
Someone over 18 who can make decisions about the windows needs to be there while the advisor measures and quotes. You do not need to prepare anything or move furniture beyond giving access to the windows.
Can I change or cancel my appointment?
Yes. Your confirmation carries a link to your booking where you can ask to move or cancel it, or you can ring the office on 0800 233 55 66 and we will move it to the next visiting day for your area.
Measuring and fitting
Who measures, who fits, and what happens if a window is not square.
Who measures the windows?
Your advisor does, on the appointment. That matters for more than convenience: because we take the measurements, the fit is our responsibility rather than yours. Every opening is measured on its own — we never size one window off the one next to it.
Is fitting included in the price?
Yes. The quote you are given covers the product, the fitting and the guarantee. Your fitter hangs everything, checks the operation with you and takes the packaging away.
Can I measure up myself?
You can, and we have a step-by-step guide with a photo-based measuring tool if you want an idea of sizes and cost before booking. For an order we still send an advisor, because a self-measure moves the responsibility for the fit onto you.
My windows are old and not square — is that a problem?
No, it is the normal case in a lot of British housing, especially stone terraces, cottages and anything Victorian. Made to measure means cut to the opening you actually have, including reveals that taper and frames that have settled. Your advisor will tell you on the day whether a recess fit or a face fit will look better.
What is the difference between a recess fit and a face fit?
A recess fit sits inside the window opening, so the frame and reveal stay visible and the blind looks built in. A face fit is mounted on the wall or frame outside the opening, which covers the frame completely, blocks more light at the edges and suits shallow reveals. Your advisor holds both against the wall so you can see the difference before choosing.
Do you do conservatories, bays and big glazed spans?
Yes. Bays are measured pane by pane so the set lines through, and conservatory roofs and tall glazing are quoted after the advisor has seen the frames — those jobs depend on the fixing points, which cannot be judged from a photo.
Prices, quotes and payment
How a quote is built, what is included, and the ways to spread the cost.
How is a quote worked out?
By the size of each opening, the product and fabric you choose, the heading or mechanism, and any motorisation. Because everything is made to your measurements there is no single list price — you get a written figure on the day, itemised per window, with the fitting and guarantee included.
Do I have to decide on the day?
No. Take the written quote away and think about it. There is no obligation to order at the appointment and no charge if you decide against it.
Can I spread the cost?
Finance options are available on larger orders — your advisor will talk you through what is available for your job when they quote.
Are there any current offers?
Seasonal offers and multi-window deals run through the year and are listed on the site. Your advisor applies whatever is running when they price your job.
Blinds
Choosing between roller, roman, venetian, vertical, wooden and day & night.
Which type of blind suits which room?
Rollers are the simplest and best value and take blackout or dimout fabrics for bedrooms. Romans give a soft, curtain-like fold in living rooms. Venetians and wooden slats let you tilt light rather than just block it, which suits kitchens and studies. Verticals handle wide spans and patio doors. Day & night blinds have alternating stripes so you can trade privacy against light through the day.
Do you do proper blackout blinds?
Yes — blackout fabric on a roller or a roman, and a face fit or a side channel where you want to cut the light leak around the edges too. Nursery and shift-worker bedrooms are the two rooms where it is worth insisting on it.
What works in a kitchen or bathroom?
Moisture-hardy choices: PVC or faux-wood venetians and wipeable roller fabrics. Real wood is best kept out of a bathroom and away from a hob, because steam and heat move the slats over time.
Can blinds be motorised?
Yes — battery or mains, with a remote or app control, and grouped so a run of windows moves together. Motorisation is the usual answer for anything high, behind furniture or in a conservatory roof, and the motor carries the same 1-year guarantee as the blind.
Are your blinds child safe?
Every corded blind is supplied with the child-safety devices required by UK regulations, and your fitter installs them and shows you how they work. Where a room has cots or small children we will usually recommend a cordless or motorised option instead.
Curtains
Headings, linings, poles and how curtains are finished.
Which curtain heading should I choose?
Eyelet curtains run straight onto a pole and fall in deep, even waves — the simplest to draw. Pencil pleat is a gathered tape that works on a pole or a track. Pinch pleat is hand-formed in groups and stitched, which is the most tailored look and stacks tightest. Wave hangs from a track in a continuous S-curve and suits large modern windows.
What difference does the lining make?
A standard lining protects the fabric and improves how it hangs. Thermal lining measurably helps a cold or draughty room. Blackout lining is what you want in a bedroom. Interlining adds weight and body for a heavier, more expensive drape.
Do you supply the poles and tracks?
Yes, and your fitter puts them up. Getting the pole height and width right is part of the job — curtains that clear the sill and stack off the glass need the pole set beyond the opening.
Can I have curtains and a blind on the same window?
Very common. A slim roller or roman inside the reveal gives you blackout and privacy, with curtains face-fitted outside it for warmth and dressing. Your advisor will check the reveal is deep enough for both to work.
Shutters
Styles, materials and what shutters need from a window.
What shutter styles are there?
Full height covers the whole window in one or more panels. Café style covers the bottom half only, so you keep privacy at street level and light above. Tier-on-tier splits into independent top and bottom panels, so you can open one and keep the other closed. Shaped panels follow arched, angled and gable windows.
Why choose shutters over blinds?
Shutters are fitted furniture rather than a soft covering: they follow the reveal, add insulation and security, need no cords, and are the usual choice in conservation streets and period properties where a blind would hang in front of a frame worth showing.
Which shutter material should I pick?
Hardwood for the finest grain and the largest panels. Engineered wood for stability at a lower price. Waterproof ABS or vinyl for bathrooms and wet rooms. Your advisor matches the material to the room and the span.
How long do shutters take to fit?
A shutter installation takes longer than a blind because each frame is fixed and levelled to the opening — a typical room is a morning's work. Your fitter tidies and takes the packaging away when they are done.
Garage doors, awnings and pergolas
The outdoor side of what we fit, and how those visits are arranged.
What kinds of garage door do you fit?
Insulated roller doors that coil into a box above the opening and give you the full drive-through width, and sectional doors that lift in horizontal panels, which suits a garage used as a room as well as a store. Both can be motorised with a remote.
Do garage doors need a survey?
Yes. The opening, the lintel and the fixing points all decide what can be installed, so a garage door is always measured on site before it is quoted.
Do you do outdoor shading too?
Yes — retractable awnings and louvred pergolas, both fitted by our own teams. These are surveyed on site because the fixing into the wall or the ground is what dictates the specification.
Guarantee, aftercare and cleaning
What is covered, for how long, and how to look after what we fit.
What guarantee do I get?
A 1-year guarantee on every blind, shutter and motor we supply and fit. If something goes wrong inside that period, ring the office and we come back out.
Something is not working — who do I call?
The office on 0800 233 55 66, or email info@impressblinds.co.uk with your booking reference. Because we make, measure and fit, there is no manufacturer to chase — the job stays with us.
How do I clean blinds, curtains and shutters?
Dust slats and shutter louvres with a soft brush or a dry cloth, and wipe PVC or faux wood with a damp cloth. Roller fabrics take a light sponge on a stain, never a soak. Most curtains should be dry cleaned rather than washed, because washing shrinks the lining at a different rate to the face fabric.
Can you repair or replace parts later?
Usually yes — chains, brackets, wands and motors can be replaced without remaking the blind. Ring the office with the reference on your paperwork and we will identify the part from the original order.
Where we cover
How our routes work, and how to check your own postcode.
Do you cover my area?
We fit across England and Wales from our Batley workshop, with regular routes into every county we list. Each postcode area has set visiting days, so the honest answer is postcode-specific — put yours into the booking form and it will show the next dates our advisors are actually in your area.
Is there a charge for travelling to me?
No. The appointment is free wherever you are on our routes. Further afield we group visits into planned trips instead of driving out for a single window, which is why some areas have fewer dates to choose from.
My town is not listed — can you still come?
Almost certainly. The listed towns are the ones we name, not the limit of the route. Ring 0800 233 55 66 with your postcode and we will tell you which day we pass nearby.
Where are the blinds actually made?
At our own workshop and showroom at Unit C2, 41 Carlinghow Mills, Bradford Road, Batley, West Yorkshire WF17 8LL. Making, measuring and fitting all sit under one roof, which is why a fault is ours to fix rather than a supplier's to argue about.
Still not answered?
Talk to the office — we would rather answer a question now than have you guess. Lines are open through the working week, and an advisor can also answer everything at your free appointment.
