Blackout blinds
Blackout fabric is coated on the back so that light cannot pass through the weave. Worth knowing before you order: inside a recess, light still travels down the small gap at each side, so a blackout roller dims a room dramatically rather than sealing it. For a nursery or a shift worker, ask your advisor about fitting outside the recess or using a system with side channels.

Explained
Blackout blinds, explained
Blackout blinds use a fabric or PVC that light can't pass through, so the room goes properly dark rather than just dimmed. On this filter you'll mostly find roller blinds, vertical blinds and their replacement slats, made in plain and lightly textured finishes rather than bold prints. Most also carry a thermal property, so as well as blocking light they help even out a room's temperature. They're offered across bedrooms, bathrooms, children's rooms, conservatories and dining rooms, and many come in wipeable, waterproof versions for kitchens and bathrooms. Your advisor will bring swatches so you can see how each fabric behaves against your own window before you commit.
The finishes shown here lean towards plain, softly textured neutrals in white, cream, grey and stone, so they sit quietly in most bedrooms and living spaces rather than making a pattern statement.
Best for
- Bedrooms where early light or streetlighting disturbs sleep
- Nurseries and children's rooms needing daytime naps in the dark
- Shift workers sleeping at unusual hours
- Media rooms or home cinemas
- Conservatories that need shade and privacy after dark
Worth knowing
- Vertical blinds with gaps between louvres won't block light as completely as a close-fitting roller
- PVC and vinyl blackout finishes are wipeable but can look and feel less soft than fabric roller blinds
- Replacement slats are for topping up an existing blind, not a full blackout solution on their own
How to choose
- 1
Roller or vertical
A roller blind gives one continuous piece of fabric with fewer light gaps at the edges, while vertical blinds suit wide windows or patio doors but can let in slivers of light between louvres.
- 2
Room and finish
For bathrooms and kitchens, look for the wipeable, waterproof versions; for bedrooms and nurseries, a soft fabric roller in a plain or subtly textured finish keeps things calm.
- 3
Cordless where it matters
If the blind is going in a child's room or nursery, choose a cordless or motorised option; your advisor will point these out and fit the required safety devices regardless.
Blackout blinds: questions people ask
What's the difference between the roller and vertical blackout blinds here?
Roller blinds are a single piece of fabric that rolls up and down, giving a more continuous blackout with fewer gaps at the sides. Vertical blinds are made of individual louvres that turn to close, which suits wide windows and patio doors but can let in slim slivers of light at the edges and between slats. Your advisor can show you both against your own window.
Can I get a blackout blind for a bathroom or kitchen?
Yes, several of the ranges here are offered in wipeable, waterproof fabrics or PVC, designed for steam and splashes as well as blocking light. Real wood finishes aren't recommended in these rooms, but the PVC and easy-wipe roller and vertical options are made for exactly this use.
Are the replacement slats sold here full blinds?
No, replacement slats are individual louvres for topping up or repairing an existing vertical blind, not a complete blackout blind on their own. If you need a new blind rather than spare parts, choose one of the full roller or vertical ranges instead.
Do blackout blinds work well in a conservatory?
Several of these ranges are listed for conservatories, where blocking strong light and glare matters as much as darkening the room. Ask your advisor about pairing a blackout roller with the room's other blinds, since conservatory glazing and orientation vary a lot from house to house.
Can a blackout blind be cordless or motorised for a child's room?
Most of the roller ranges shown here are available cordless, and motorisation is an option on request. For nurseries and children's rooms this is generally what's recommended, and every corded blind still comes fitted with the required child-safety devices regardless of which option you choose.

1. Roller and brackets
The fabric winds onto a tube held by two small brackets, inside the recess or on the wall above it. Which one suits your window is settled when it's measured.
Your advisor brings samples of every option to your window, so you can see and feel them before you choose.

Cut to your window, not trimmed to fit
We measure each recess on site and allow for handles, tiles, sills and tilt-and-turn frames before anything is made.

A fabric that looks warm under showroom lighting can read grey at home. Your advisor brings the range to your rooms so you judge it against your walls.
Fitted by the people who sold it
Our own fitter installs, squares up and takes the packaging away. Nothing is subcontracted out and there is no surprise charge at the end.
One year of cover
Fabric, mechanism and fitting are covered by our 1-year guarantee. If a chain or a bracket fails, we come back out and put it right.
Finance options available. We offer flexible ways to pay so a whole-house refresh doesn't have to land in one go. Your advisor will talk you through what's available at your appointment.

Blackout blinds: your questions answered
How this type behaves in a real room, plus how measuring, fitting and the guarantee work.
Will it be completely dark?
The fabric will not let light through, but inside a recess a thin line of daylight still travels down the gap at each side and over the roll. For a nursery or a shift worker, fitting outside the recess or using a system with side channels is what closes that gap — your advisor will say on the day which the window allows.
Which blind takes blackout fabric?
Rollers and romans both do, and a blackout lining is standard on curtains. Slatted blinds cannot be blackout in the same way, because light passes at every slat edge however tightly they close.
Does blackout fabric keep a room cooler?
It helps, because the coating reflects rather than absorbs, but heat is a different problem to light. If a south-facing room is the issue, ask about thermal fabrics, which are made for it.
Is fitting included in the price?
Yes. The quote you are given covers the product, the fitting and the guarantee. Your fitter hangs everything, checks the operation with you and takes the packaging away.
Who measures the windows?
Your advisor does, on the appointment. That matters for more than convenience: because we take the measurements, the fit is our responsibility rather than yours. Every opening is measured on its own — we never size one window off the one next to it.
What guarantee do I get?
A 1-year guarantee on every blind, shutter and motor we supply and fit. If something goes wrong inside that period, ring the office and we come back out.
Which type of blind suits which room?
Rollers are the simplest and best value and take blackout or dimout fabrics for bedrooms. Romans give a soft, curtain-like fold in living rooms. Venetians and wooden slats let you tilt light rather than just block it, which suits kitchens and studies. Verticals handle wide spans and patio doors. Day & night blinds have alternating stripes so you can trade privacy against light through the day.
