Roller blinds
A roller is one clean sheet of fabric on a smooth tube — the simplest mechanism we fit and the easiest to keep clean, which is why it ends up in most kitchens and bathrooms. The fabric does the work, so the choice is really about weave: an open weave keeps the view and softens glare, a dimout takes the room down several stops, and a blackout-coated fabric is as dark as a roller gets inside a recess.

Explained
Roller blinds, explained
Roller blinds are a single piece of fabric that winds onto a tube at the top of the window, giving a flat, unbroken sheet of colour or texture when down and rolling away neatly out of sight when up. Impress makes them to measure for each opening, in plain woven fabrics, subtly patterned weaves and wipeable PVC, with blackout or thermal linings where a room needs them. Control is usually a side chain, though cordless and motorised versions are available. Because the fabric hangs flat with no folds, the finish depends entirely on the fabric itself, which is why the ranges here range from stone-like textures to smooth matt plains.
Suits plain and subtly textured fabrics rather than bold pattern, from crisp whites and greys through to warmer neutrals, and works equally well in a modern or a more traditional room.
Best for
- Kitchens and bathrooms, where wipeable, waterproof fabrics cope with steam and splashes
- Bedrooms and children's rooms, where blackout or thermal versions help with light and warmth
- A clean, uncluttered look on modern windows, with no swags or folds when the blind is up
- Layering under curtains, sitting neatly in the recess while curtains hang outside
Worth knowing
- Plain fabric blinds and PVC blinds behave differently on cleaning and in damp rooms, so check which is which before choosing for a bathroom
- A blackout fabric still leaves light at the edges of the blind unless fitted with a side channel, so ask your advisor if a fully dark room matters
How to choose
- 1
Start with the room
Bathrooms and kitchens want wipeable or waterproof fabric; bedrooms often do better in blackout or thermal for sleep and warmth; living rooms usually just want a fabric you like the look of.
- 2
Decide on control
A side chain suits most windows; cordless or motorised options are worth asking about for children's rooms, high windows or anywhere a cord could be a hazard.
- 3
Think about fit
A side channel helps block stray light at the edges, where the window allows one; your advisor can show you the difference against your own window.
Roller blinds: questions people ask
What is the difference between a plain fabric roller blind and a PVC roller blind?
Plain fabric blinds are woven and have a soft, textured finish, suited to most rooms including ones with light steam. PVC roller blinds have a smooth, wipeable surface built for constant damp, such as a bathroom with a shower or a kitchen close to the sink. Your advisor can point out which of the fabrics you like are available in each.
Can a roller blind be grouped so several windows move together?
Yes, where the roller blind is motorised. Several blinds on the same wall or run of windows can be linked to a single remote or app control so they open and close together. This is a common choice for a run of windows or bifold doors rather than single small windows.
Will a roller blind fit an out-of-square window neatly?
Yes. Every opening is measured individually by the advisor when they visit, rather than relying on a standard size, so the blind is made to the actual shape of your window rather than a nominal one. This is normal for older British houses where openings are rarely perfectly square.
Do roller blinds work well in a conservatory?
Many of the ranges on this page are offered for conservatories, usually in thermal or blackout fabrics that help with heat and glare from a glazed roof or large expanse of glass. Your advisor will confirm which fabrics in a design you like are suited to a conservatory on the day.
Is a side chain safe with young children in the house?
Every corded roller blind is fitted with the child-safety devices UK rules require, and the fitter shows you how to use them. Where there are cots or small children in a room, cordless or motorised control is usually recommended instead, and your advisor can talk through the options.

1. Roller and brackets
The fabric winds onto a tube held by two small brackets, inside the recess or on the wall above it. Which one suits your window is settled when it's measured.
Your advisor brings samples of every option to your window, so you can see and feel them before you choose.

A fabric that looks warm under showroom lighting can read grey at home. Your advisor brings the range to your rooms so you judge it against your walls.
Fitted by the people who sold it
Our own fitter installs, squares up and takes the packaging away. Nothing is subcontracted out and there is no surprise charge at the end.
One year of cover
Fabric, mechanism and fitting are covered by our 1-year guarantee. If a chain or a bracket fails, we come back out and put it right.
Finance options available. We offer flexible ways to pay so a whole-house refresh doesn't have to land in one go. Your advisor will talk you through what's available at your appointment.

Roller blinds: your questions answered
How this type behaves in a real room, plus how measuring, fitting and the guarantee work.
How dark does a roller blind make a room?
That is down to the fabric, not the blind. An open weave keeps the view and only softens glare, a dimout takes a room down several stops, and a blackout-coated fabric stops light through the weave completely. Inside a recess a little light still runs down the gap at each side, so for a genuinely dark bedroom ask your advisor about fitting outside the recess.
How do I clean a roller blind?
Dust it with a soft brush while it is rolled down, and sponge a mark with a barely damp cloth. Never soak the fabric or put it in water — the stiffening in the weave is what keeps the blind hanging flat, and a soaking is what makes it ripple.
Are rollers a good choice for a kitchen?
They are the usual answer: one flat sheet with nothing to trap grease, and wipeable fabrics that cope with steam. Over a sink or a hob we will point you at a PVC-coated or moisture-hardy weave rather than a soft furnishing fabric.
Is fitting included in the price?
Yes. The quote you are given covers the product, the fitting and the guarantee. Your fitter hangs everything, checks the operation with you and takes the packaging away.
Who measures the windows?
Your advisor does, on the appointment. That matters for more than convenience: because we take the measurements, the fit is our responsibility rather than yours. Every opening is measured on its own — we never size one window off the one next to it.
What guarantee do I get?
A 1-year guarantee on every blind, shutter and motor we supply and fit. If something goes wrong inside that period, ring the office and we come back out.
Which type of blind suits which room?
Rollers are the simplest and best value and take blackout or dimout fabrics for bedrooms. Romans give a soft, curtain-like fold in living rooms. Venetians and wooden slats let you tilt light rather than just block it, which suits kitchens and studies. Verticals handle wide spans and patio doors. Day & night blinds have alternating stripes so you can trade privacy against light through the day.
