Roman blinds
A roman blind is curtain fabric that stacks into soft horizontal folds above the glass. You get the warmth and the pattern of a curtain without losing the wall either side of the window, which is why they work so well in bedrooms, bay seats and rooms where furniture is tight to the reveal. Add a blackout or thermal lining and the same blind does a second job.

Explained
Roman blinds, explained
Roman blinds fold into neat horizontal pleats as they rise, sitting flat against the glass when down and stacking into a soft pad of fabric at the top when up. Because the whole blind is one piece of fabric rather than slats or a roller tube, the choice really comes down to the fabric itself: plain weaves, jacquards, prints, embroidered designs and textured patchworks all show up in this filter, in a wide range of colourways. They suit windows where you want the look of curtains without the bulk, and they layer well alongside curtains for a dressier finish. Lining and control options are confirmed by your advisor once they've measured the window and talked through how you'll use the room.
Roman blinds suit rooms with a softer, more traditional or layered look, from plain textured weaves in quiet neutrals to bolder botanical or geometric prints for a more decorative finish.
Best for
- Bedrooms and living rooms where a softer, fabric look is wanted over a hard blind
- Bay windows dressed with a run of roman blinds rather than one wide blind
- Period or traditional interiors where pattern and texture suit the room
- Layering under curtains for a finished, tailored window
Worth knowing
- Patterned and embroidered fabrics can pull the eye differently depending on fold depth, so ask your advisor how a repeat will sit once folded
- Fabric weight and lining affect how crisply the pleats stack; heavier or interlined fabrics sit differently to plain cottons
How to choose
- 1
Start with the room
Bedrooms often take a blackout-backed roman for darkness; kitchens and bathrooms need a wipeable or moisture-tolerant fabric, which your advisor can point to.
- 2
Think about pattern scale
Large prints and geometric designs read differently once folded into pleats than they do flat on a sample card, so it's worth seeing fabric held against your own window.
- 3
Decide on control
Cordless, chain or motorised operation all suit roman blinds; motorisation is common for taller or harder-to-reach windows.
Roman blinds: questions people ask
Can a roman blind be made from a patterned curtain fabric?
Often yes. Several of the fabrics shown here are also used for curtains, and your advisor can confirm whether a particular design and weight works well as a folded blind rather than a hanging curtain.
Do roman blinds work well in a run of matching windows, such as a bay?
Yes, this is a common way to dress a bay: a separate roman blind is made for each pane so each one operates independently, while the fabric and heading match across the run for a uniform look.
How do I know if a heavy or textured fabric will fold neatly?
It depends on the weight and structure of the weave, which is why your advisor brings the fabric to your window and can talk through how it will stack once made up, rather than guessing from a small sample.
Are roman blinds available with a blackout lining?
Many of the fabrics in this filter can be made up with a blackout lining behind the show fabric; your advisor will confirm which lining options suit the specific fabric you choose.
Can roman blinds be motorised?
Yes, roman blinds can be fitted with a battery or mains motor and controlled by remote or app, the same as other motorised blinds Impress supply, and this carries the same one-year guarantee.

Roman blinds: your questions answered
How this type behaves in a real room, plus how measuring, fitting and the guarantee work.
How much of the window does a roman blind cover when it is up?
The folds stack into a stiff bundle at the top, so a raised roman covers roughly the top fifth of the opening. That is worth knowing on a short window — your advisor will usually suggest fitting the blind above the reveal so the stack sits on the wall rather than across the glass.
Do roman blinds come lined?
Yes, and the lining is where the blind earns its money. A standard lining protects the fabric and improves how the folds hang, thermal lining helps a cold room, and blackout lining is what most bedrooms end up with.
Would you fit a roman blind in a bathroom?
Not usually. Roman blinds are made from curtain fabric with a lining behind it, and repeated steam marks and shrinks the two at different rates. A roller or a faux wood venetian is the better answer in a wet room.
Is fitting included in the price?
Yes. The quote you are given covers the product, the fitting and the guarantee. Your fitter hangs everything, checks the operation with you and takes the packaging away.
Who measures the windows?
Your advisor does, on the appointment. That matters for more than convenience: because we take the measurements, the fit is our responsibility rather than yours. Every opening is measured on its own — we never size one window off the one next to it.
What guarantee do I get?
A 1-year guarantee on every blind, shutter and motor we supply and fit. If something goes wrong inside that period, ring the office and we come back out.
Which type of blind suits which room?
Rollers are the simplest and best value and take blackout or dimout fabrics for bedrooms. Romans give a soft, curtain-like fold in living rooms. Venetians and wooden slats let you tilt light rather than just block it, which suits kitchens and studies. Verticals handle wide spans and patio doors. Day & night blinds have alternating stripes so you can trade privacy against light through the day.
