How they are put together
Most of the decision is structural: what the frame leans on, and what you want it to do when the weather turns.
Louvred roof
Aluminium blades that rotate through 135 degrees. Open them for sun, angle them for dappled shade, close them for a watertight roof that drains into the posts and away through a downpipe.
Wall-mounted
Two posts and a wall plate, so the pergola leans on the house. The usual choice off a rear elevation or a set of bi-folds, and the cheapest build because there is less structure.
Freestanding
Four posts, sited wherever the garden works best — over a dining table, a hot tub or a corner that catches the evening sun. Needs a solid base, so we look at the paving before quoting.
Side screens and zip blinds
The bit people add a season later. Sliding glass panels, fabric zip screens or louvred side walls turn a shaded frame into somewhere usable when the wind gets up.

Built for rain, not just for sun
A closed louvre roof sheds water into an integrated gutter in the beam and takes it down through a post. That is the difference between a pergola and an awning — you can sit under it in a shower.
The base is checked before the frame
Posts have to land on something that will hold them. We look at your paving, its bedding and any services running underneath before committing to a layout, rather than discovering it on fitting day.
Powder-coated to stay looking new
Marine-grade powder-coated aluminium does not rot, warp or need re-staining every other summer the way a timber frame does. It washes down with a hose.
Wired once, added to later
If you think you may want lights, heaters or a motor for the louvres, we plan the cable runs at fitting. Retro-fitting them through a closed aluminium beam afterwards is far harder than doing it once.

Getting the specification right
A pergola is a structure rather than a furnishing, so a few decisions are hard to reverse once the posts are down.
Sizing the frame
Work back from the furniture. A six-seat table wants roughly 4m by 3m of covered space once you allow for chairs pulling out. Larger spans are possible but need a heavier beam or an intermediate post, which is worth knowing before you fall for a size.
Motors, lights and heat
Louvres are usually motorised on a handset, and rain and wind sensors can close them automatically. LED strips in the beams and infrared heaters under them are what make the structure usable in the evening and into October.
Through the winter
Leave the louvres open through storms so wind passes through rather than pushing on a closed roof, clear leaves out of the gutter channel each autumn, and there is nothing else to do. No staining, no sanding.

Do I need planning permission for a pergola?
Most domestic louvred pergolas fall under permitted development, but height, boundary distance and listed or conservation status all change that, and we are not the right people to rule on it — your local planning office is. Your surveyor will tell you the finished height and projection so you have real figures to check with.
What does a pergola need to stand on?
Something that can take a fixing: concrete, a proper slab bed or a footing we dig. Loose paving on sand is not enough on its own. The survey is mostly about the ground and the wall, which is why a pergola cannot be quoted from a photograph.
Pergola or awning — which should I get?
If your problem is sun, an awning is far less money and comes away out of the weather. If you want the patio usable in a shower, at night, or through the colder months, a louvred roof with lighting and side screens is the only one of the two that does it.
Do you do outdoor shading too?
Yes — retractable awnings and louvred pergolas, both fitted by our own teams. These are surveyed on site because the fixing into the wall or the ground is what dictates the specification.
Is fitting included in the price?
Yes. The quote you are given covers the product, the fitting and the guarantee. Your fitter hangs everything, checks the operation with you and takes the packaging away.
What guarantee do I get?
A 1-year guarantee on every blind, shutter and motor we supply and fit. If something goes wrong inside that period, ring the office and we come back out.
