Explained
Fly Screen, explained
A fly screen is a fine mesh blind that keeps insects out while a window or door stays open, rather than a fabric blind for light or privacy. On this page it appears as a pleated, concertina-style screen that folds flat to one side when not needed, shown fitted to patio doors, bi-fold doors and windows. It comes as one of several types built into a single product alongside blackout or honeycomb layers, so you may be picking a mesh option within a wider blind rather than a separate item. Colours run from dark charcoal to softer neutral tones, all in a fine ribbed texture.
Suits patio doors and bi-fold sets where a discreet, fold-away mesh is wanted rather than a visible net curtain or hinged frame; the pleated rib texture reads as a considered detail rather than a bolt-on extra.
Best for
- Patio and bi-fold doors that get left open in summer
- Bedrooms and kitchens where flies and midges are a nuisance
- Households wanting insect protection without net curtains or hinged screens
- Openings where a pleated screen can retract out of the way when not needed
Worth knowing
- The two ranges shown here are pleated Blind Screen mesh products rather than a dedicated insect-mesh-only line, so expect the same concertina fold-away style across colours
- Fly screens are about keeping insects out, not blocking light, so pair with a separate blackout or honeycomb blind if you also want to darken the room
How to choose
- 1
Match it to the opening
Fly screens on this page are shown across patio and bi-fold doors as well as windows. Your advisor measures the actual opening and confirms which fold-away arrangement suits it on the day.
- 2
Think about light versus insects
A fly screen is a mesh, not a fabric, so it will not darken a room. If you want both, look at pairing one with a blackout or honeycomb blind on the same window.
- 3
Pick a tone that suits the room
The samples here run from charcoal/black to a soft beige rib, both in a fine pleated texture. Choose based on the frame colour and how visible you want the folded screen to be at rest.
Fly Screen: questions people ask
Does a fly screen block out light or give privacy?
No. It is an insect mesh, so light and outlines still pass through it. If you also want to darken the room or add privacy, your advisor can pair it with a blackout or honeycomb blind on the same window or door.
Can a fly screen go on bi-fold or patio doors that fold back fully?
The ranges shown here are pleated, concertina-style screens designed to slide and fold out of the way, which suits doors that open wide. Your advisor will confirm the exact fit and operation for your opening when they measure.
Is the fly screen a separate blind or part of another blind?
On these ranges it is listed alongside blackout and honeycomb options within the same product, so you may be choosing a mesh layer as part of a wider blind rather than a standalone screen. Ask your advisor to clarify what is included.
Will a fly screen work in a bathroom or kitchen?
The samples shown are used in bedrooms and patio doors rather than wet rooms. If you need insect protection near a kitchen or bathroom, mention this at your appointment so the advisor can confirm a suitable fabric and fitting.
How is a fly screen kept clean?
As a pleated mesh, it should be dusted gently with a soft brush or dry cloth in the same way as other pleated blinds, rather than wiped or washed, to avoid pulling the fine ribbed texture out of shape.

1. Roller and brackets
The fabric winds onto a tube held by two small brackets, inside the recess or on the wall above it. Which one suits your window is settled when it's measured.
Your advisor brings samples of every option to your window, so you can see and feel them before you choose.

The clocks go back on Sunday 25 October, and the dark evenings arrive with them. Blackout blinds and lined curtains keep the glow in and the street out.

Why our fly screen service is right for you
Cut to your window, not trimmed to fit
We measure each recess on site and allow for handles, tiles, sills and tilt-and-turn frames before anything is made.
Samples seen in your own light
A fabric that looks warm under showroom lighting can read grey at home. Your advisor brings the range to your rooms so you judge it against your walls.
Fitted by the people who sold it
Our own fitter installs, squares up and takes the packaging away. Nothing is subcontracted out and there is no surprise charge at the end.
One year of cover
Fabric, mechanism and fitting are covered by our 1-year guarantee. If a chain or a bracket fails, we come back out and put it right.
Finance options available. We offer flexible ways to pay so a whole-house refresh doesn't have to land in one go. Your advisor will talk you through what's available at your appointment.

Fly Screen: your questions answered
How this type behaves in a real room, plus how measuring, fitting and the guarantee work.
Is fitting included in the price?
Yes. The quote you are given covers the product, the fitting and the guarantee. Your fitter hangs everything, checks the operation with you and takes the packaging away.
Who measures the windows?
Your advisor does, on the appointment. That matters for more than convenience: because we take the measurements, the fit is our responsibility rather than yours. Every opening is measured on its own — we never size one window off the one next to it.
What guarantee do I get?
A 1-year guarantee on every blind, shutter and motor we supply and fit. If something goes wrong inside that period, ring the office and we come back out.
Which type of blind suits which room?
Rollers are the simplest and best value and take blackout or dimout fabrics for bedrooms. Romans give a soft, curtain-like fold in living rooms. Venetians and wooden slats let you tilt light rather than just block it, which suits kitchens and studies. Verticals handle wide spans and patio doors. Day & night blinds have alternating stripes so you can trade privacy against light through the day.
