Explained
Top Down Bottom Up blinds, explained
Top down bottom up blinds are pleated fabric blinds split into two independently moving sections. You can lower the top half to cut glare while leaving the bottom half up for light, or raise the bottom half for privacy while keeping the top open to the sky. Across this range the fabrics are mostly finely pleated honeycomb weaves, shown plain in whites, greys, neutrals and a few muted colours, giving a crisp, ridged texture when lowered rather than a flat surface. They're shown fitted to bay windows, bedrooms, French doors, kitchens and conservatory roofs, and most can be made in a corded, cordless or motorised version depending on the fabric chosen.
Best suited to plain, textured interiors, where a honeycomb pleat in a soft neutral, grey or muted colour adds quiet texture without pattern.
Best for
- Windows overlooked from the street or a neighbouring property, where you want privacy below and light above
- Bay, bedroom, French door and kitchen windows shown across this range
- Rooms where a plain, honeycomb-textured pleated fabric suits a fairly neutral scheme
- Conservatory roofs and glazed doors, since most of these fabrics also pleat flat against sloped or tall glass
Worth knowing
- Most fabrics here are pleated honeycomb weaves rather than fabric roller blinds, so the look is textured and ridged rather than flat
- A few ranges (Cici, Capri, Fairholme) are tagged with this style but shown fitted as fixed pleated blinds without the top-down bottom-up mechanism in their sample images, so check with your advisor which fabrics are available in the moving version
How to choose
- 1
Start with the light you want to keep
Because the bottom section can stay raised while the top drops, or vice versa, think about whether privacy from the pavement or light from above matters more in that room.
- 2
Match the fabric to the room
Honeycomb pleats in white, grey or muted tones suit most living spaces; warmer neutrals or soft greens work well in bedrooms; check with your advisor about wipeable options for kitchens.
- 3
Consider the control
These blinds can be operated by hand or motorised, which is worth asking about for taller windows, conservatory roofs, or any opening that's awkward to reach.
Top Down Bottom Up blinds: questions people ask
Can I have the top and bottom sections at different heights permanently?
Yes. You can set the lower section to sit at whatever height suits your sill or worktop and leave the top section to control light separately. Your advisor will talk through the setup for your specific window during the home visit.
Are these blinds available with a motor?
Some fabrics in this range can be motorised, which is worth considering for conservatory roofs or windows that are awkward to reach by hand. Ask your advisor on the day, as availability depends on the fabric and mechanism chosen.
Will the honeycomb pleat still let some light through when lowered?
Most of the fabrics shown are plain, lightly woven pleats rather than blackout material, so they diffuse light rather than block it fully. If you need a room to go fully dark, mention this to your advisor, who can point you to a suitable fabric.
Can this style go in a bathroom or kitchen?
These are fabric pleated blinds, so they're better suited to living rooms, bedrooms and dining areas than steamy bathrooms. For kitchens, ask your advisor about wipeable options within this style.
Do I need cords with this type of blind?
Not necessarily. Many top down bottom up blinds are supplied cordless or with child-safety features fitted as standard, and your advisor can talk through the safest option, especially if you have young children.

1. Top rail that moves
On a top-down, bottom-up blind both rails move, so you can cover the lower panes for privacy and keep the sky.

Top down bottom up blinds: privacy at street level, light above
Most blinds open from the bottom up, which gives you the view and gives the street the view too. A top down bottom up blind also opens from the top, so you can cover the lower part of the window and let daylight in above head height.

Top Down Bottom Up blinds: your questions answered
How this type behaves in a real room, plus how measuring, fitting and the guarantee work.
Is fitting included in the price?
Yes. The quote you are given covers the product, the fitting and the guarantee. Your fitter hangs everything, checks the operation with you and takes the packaging away.
Who measures the windows?
Your advisor does, on the appointment. That matters for more than convenience: because we take the measurements, the fit is our responsibility rather than yours. Every opening is measured on its own — we never size one window off the one next to it.
What guarantee do I get?
A 1-year guarantee on every blind, shutter and motor we supply and fit. If something goes wrong inside that period, ring the office and we come back out.
Which type of blind suits which room?
Rollers are the simplest and best value and take blackout or dimout fabrics for bedrooms. Romans give a soft, curtain-like fold in living rooms. Venetians and wooden slats let you tilt light rather than just block it, which suits kitchens and studies. Verticals handle wide spans and patio doors. Day & night blinds have alternating stripes so you can trade privacy against light through the day.
