Explained
French door blinds, explained
French door blinds are made to fit glazed double doors without catching on the handle or hinge when the door opens. Most ranges on this filter are pleated fabrics fitted as Perfect Fit, which clips to the door frame and moves with the door, or Top Down Bottom Up, which sits within the recess and lets you drop the top pane or raise the bottom independently. Colours run through soft neutrals, greys and a few muted or patterned options, all in fine concertina pleats rather than flat panels. A handful of ranges bring in Day & Night stripes or metal venetian slats instead, so it's worth checking the mechanism and look before settling on a fabric.
Pleated honeycomb fabrics in soft neutrals, greys and the odd muted green or patterned option suit contemporary and traditional glazed doors alike, sitting flush without curtain-style bulk.
Best for
- Full-glazed French doors where the blind needs to sit clear of the handles
- Households wanting the door to stay usable without unclipping the blind first
- Rooms where you want light control without full blackout
- Doors that get direct sun for part of the day and need a fabric that copes with warmth
Worth knowing
- Most ranges here are pleated fabrics on Perfect Fit or Top Down Bottom Up mechanisms, both fitted within the door frame rather than as a standalone blind
- A few ranges (Firstlight, for instance) are Day & Night styles rather than pleated, so the look and operation differ from the rest of the page
- Cord safety devices are fitted as standard, but for doors used daily a cordless or motorised option is usually easier to live with
How to choose
- 1
Check the mechanism first
Perfect Fit blinds clip into the door frame with no drilling and move with the door; Top Down Bottom Up blinds fit within the recess and let you drop the top or raise the bottom independently.
- 2
Match light control to aspect
Pleated fabrics in cream or pale tones soften glare without blacking the room out; darker or Day & Night styles give more privacy for doors facing a path or neighbouring garden.
- 3
Think about daily handling
A door blind gets used more than a window one. Cordless wands or motorised control keep the mechanism away from door edges and small hands.
French door blinds: questions people ask
Will the blind get in the way of opening the door?
Perfect Fit blinds are fixed to the door itself so they open and close with it, and pleated Top Down Bottom Up blinds sit within the frame recess. Your advisor will check the door furniture and glazing bars on the day and confirm the best fit.
Can I have the same fabric on the door and the windows either side?
Many of these pleated ranges are offered across French door, patio door and bay window openings, so a matching set is usually possible. Your advisor brings the full sample range to hold against each opening in your own light.
Do French door blinds need to be motorised?
No, but motorisation is a common choice for doors that are used often, since it avoids a cord or wand near the handle. Battery or mains options are available and carry the same one-year guarantee as the blind itself.
Is Perfect Fit or Top Down Bottom Up better for a French door?
Perfect Fit clips onto the door frame with no drilling and travels with the door when it opens; Top Down Bottom Up sits within the recess and gives independent control of light from the top and bottom. Your advisor can compare both against your actual door.
Can the blind be taken off if I need to clean the glass?
Perfect Fit blinds are designed to unclip easily for cleaning behind them. Ask your advisor to show you the release mechanism when they fit it.

1. Roller and brackets
The fabric winds onto a tube held by two small brackets, inside the recess or on the wall above it. Which one suits your window is settled when it's measured.
Your advisor brings samples of every option to your window, so you can see and feel them before you choose.

Measuring French doors, patio doors and bi-folds for blinds
A door is a window you walk through, and that changes the measuring. The blind has to clear the handle, let the door open fully and leave the way out clear, every day. Here is how to measure French doors, sliding patio doors and bi-folds, and what to check beyond the size.

French door blinds: your questions answered
How this type behaves in a real room, plus how measuring, fitting and the guarantee work.
Is fitting included in the price?
Yes. The quote you are given covers the product, the fitting and the guarantee. Your fitter hangs everything, checks the operation with you and takes the packaging away.
Who measures the windows?
Your advisor does, on the appointment. That matters for more than convenience: because we take the measurements, the fit is our responsibility rather than yours. Every opening is measured on its own — we never size one window off the one next to it.
What guarantee do I get?
A 1-year guarantee on every blind, shutter and motor we supply and fit. If something goes wrong inside that period, ring the office and we come back out.
Which type of blind suits which room?
Rollers are the simplest and best value and take blackout or dimout fabrics for bedrooms. Romans give a soft, curtain-like fold in living rooms. Venetians and wooden slats let you tilt light rather than just block it, which suits kitchens and studies. Verticals handle wide spans and patio doors. Day & night blinds have alternating stripes so you can trade privacy against light through the day.
