Explained
Patio door blinds, explained
Patio door blinds need to cover a wide opening without getting in the way of daily traffic. In this filter, the main blind types shown are vertical blinds, rollers, day and night styles, some electric options and a few door-friendly fitted styles. You will also see some screen-style products aimed at keeping the opening usable while softening glare. For patio doors, the practical questions are how the blind stacks, how easily the door can still open, and whether the fabric needs to tilt, roll or slide clear regularly.
These ranges suit practical family rooms, garden-facing living spaces and newer open-plan layouts. Plains keep a broad opening looking calm, while larger-scale patterns and banded day and night designs make more of a feature of the doors.
Best for
- Wide glazed doors where you want light control without heavy curtains
- Rooms where the door is opened often and the blind needs to move clear neatly
- Glare reduction in living areas opening onto the garden
- Simple plain fabrics as well as bolder patterned looks on larger door openings
- Homes considering motorised operation for harder-to-reach sections
Worth knowing
- How the blind stacks when open, so it does not obstruct the door you use most
- Handle clearance and frame depth on fitted styles; your advisor will confirm on the day
- A few products in this filter appear to belong to other door or window categories rather than patio doors
How to choose
- 1
Pick the opening style first
For many patio doors, vertical blinds are the straightforward option because the louvres can tilt for privacy or draw back to one side. Rollers give a cleaner sheet of fabric, while fitted door blinds can suit doors where you want the blind held close to the glass.
- 2
Think about traffic through the door
If the door is in constant use, consider how often you will need the blind fully out of the way. A blind that tilts, splits or stacks neatly can be easier to live with than one broad panel you keep lifting every time someone goes outside.
- 3
Match the fabric to the room
This filter includes plain colours, soft textures, geometric designs and botanical prints. For strong sun, ask about fabrics that cut glare; for bedrooms off a garden, blackout options may suit better. In kitchens, wipeable fabrics are usually the practical choice.
Patio door blinds: questions people ask
Are vertical blinds the usual choice for patio doors?
Often, yes. Vertical blinds suit wide door openings because the louvres can be tilted for privacy and light control, then drawn to the side. They also work well where you do not want one large piece of fabric hanging across the whole opening all day.
Can I have motorised blinds on patio doors?
Some ranges in this filter include electric options. Motorisation is often useful on wider openings or where furniture makes access awkward. Blinds can be battery or mains operated, and your advisor can talk through what suits the door and nearby space.
Do patio door blinds need to sit inside the recess?
Not always. Some are fitted within the recess, while others work better face-fixed above or around the opening. The right position depends on handles, frame depth, how the doors open and how much stack-back room is needed. Your advisor measures each opening themselves.
What works best if I still want to use the doors constantly?
Look for a blind that clears the main traffic route neatly. Vertical blinds are often chosen for this reason, and some fitted styles keep the blind close to the glass on individual door leaves. Which is best depends on the door layout and which panel opens most.
Are patterned blinds a good idea on patio doors?
They can be. A broad glazed opening gives larger motifs room to show properly, so botanical or geometric designs can work well here. If the room already has plenty going on, a plain or lightly textured fabric usually keeps the doors from feeling visually heavy.

1. Roller and brackets
The fabric winds onto a tube held by two small brackets, inside the recess or on the wall above it. Which one suits your window is settled when it's measured.
Your advisor brings samples of every option to your window, so you can see and feel them before you choose.

Patio door blinds: your questions answered
How this type behaves in a real room, plus how measuring, fitting and the guarantee work.
Is fitting included in the price?
Yes. The quote you are given covers the product, the fitting and the guarantee. Your fitter hangs everything, checks the operation with you and takes the packaging away.
Who measures the windows?
Your advisor does, on the appointment. That matters for more than convenience: because we take the measurements, the fit is our responsibility rather than yours. Every opening is measured on its own — we never size one window off the one next to it.
What guarantee do I get?
A 1-year guarantee on every blind, shutter and motor we supply and fit. If something goes wrong inside that period, ring the office and we come back out.
Which type of blind suits which room?
Rollers are the simplest and best value and take blackout or dimout fabrics for bedrooms. Romans give a soft, curtain-like fold in living rooms. Venetians and wooden slats let you tilt light rather than just block it, which suits kitchens and studies. Verticals handle wide spans and patio doors. Day & night blinds have alternating stripes so you can trade privacy against light through the day.
